Lohagarh Fort - The Iron Fort
They lost over 3000 soldiers and had to retreat, forcing a compromise with the Bharatpur leader. Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj are the two main towers erected to commemorate victories over the British. The gate facing the South is called the Chowburja (the four-pillared). An eight-metal gateway on the northern side is the Ashtadhatu that bears paintings of huge elephants. Mahal Khas, Moti Mahal, Koti Khas are the palaces on the precincts of the fort. It is clear that the structure was integral to Bharatpur’s defence strategy. The Iron Fort has no trouble living up to its name as it is among the strongest forts constructed in India. |
