Lohagarh Fort - The Iron Fort

Any discussions on the history of Bharatpur must necessarily include references to the Lohagarh Fort. The Lohagarh Fort is an 18th century structure that bears testimony to the chivalry and bravery of the Jat rulers. Constructed by Maharaja Suraj Mal, the founder of Bharatpur, it has earned its place in the pages of history by virtue of its impenetrability. The Fort is surrounded by deep moats that were once filled with water. It was able to successfully thwart persistent attacks from the British. It could withstand repeated attacks by Lord Lake for over six weeks.

They lost over 3000 soldiers and had to retreat, forcing a compromise with the Bharatpur leader. Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj are the two main towers erected to commemorate victories over the British. The gate facing the South is called the Chowburja (the four-pillared). An eight-metal gateway on the northern side is the Ashtadhatu that bears paintings of huge elephants.
