Palace on Wheels

Voted among the top ten luxury train journeys in the world, the Palace on Wheels promises to be a traveler’s delight. The seven day trip presents to you Rajasthan in capsule form. The journey begins from Safdarjung station, New Delhi and explores the cities of Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Ranthambore and Udaipur. There is place for history, architecture and wildlife as part of the tourist experience as sanctuaries, forts and palaces are on the itinerary. The trip is rounded off with a stop at Fatehpur Sikri and Agra, the city of the Taj. One learns that the Palace on Wheels is the Indian version of the Orient express in Europe. Tourist efforts received an impetus when the Government of India decided to convert the royal train into a luxury train. The royal complexion of the train won it the PATA gold award of 1987.

On-board facilities

It was started with the sole purpose of providing the tourists of Rajasthan with a unique experience. It began its services from October 1982.

The newer version of the train consists of 14 saloons, 2 restaurants cars, a bar and 4 service cars. Personal attendants, otherwise called the khidmatgars are present in every cabin to cater to the needs of the guests. The luxury train consists of 14 fully air-conditioned deluxe salons, equipped with world-class amenities to make traveling an absolute pleasure. These 14 coaches provide all kinds of comforts and can accommodate 104 passenger berths in double bedded cabins. Each cabin is equipped with channel music, intercoms, attached washrooms with both hot and cold water. The coaches of the Palace on Wheels are named after erstwhile Rajput states, each reflecting the past with its royal settings. Each salon has a mini pantry and a lounge to ensure availability of beverages, and refreshments and a get-together area. Efforts have been made to preserve the interiors of the coaches in their pristine glory.

Dining options served on the train include a spread of Continental, Indian, Chinese and Rajasthani. The two royal restaurants are called "The Maharaja" and "The Maharani”. The train also boasts of a well stocked bar offering the choicest of spirits of Indian and international variety For those of you bookworms who feel that the experience is not quite complete without books, every coach comes with a mini-library. Or you could just sit back and watch TV or listen to some music. One realizes that there is hardly anything one lacks on the journey.

The Palace on Wheels is refurbished at regular intervals. The décor in the salons of Palace on Wheels and bar lounge is in keeping with the traditionally aesthetic yet modern. So make your bookings and gear up for a temporary, nevertheless enjoyable lifestyle shift.
